Course Title:
Introduction to American Literature
Instructor:
Brief Introduction of Course Contents:
Students often are disengaged from the literature they are reading. They read dutifully, but many of them are reading literature as joyless, uninspired processes. Although many think of the literature in classes as connecting only to the life of intellect, I still believe that poems, fiction, and plays we read in classes for my own pleasure not only connected to intellect but also to emotions, experiences, judgments, and moral choices. This semester we are going to read some American narrative works, dramatic works and poetry. Dramatic works differ from other prose works in a number of other ways as well. A play is written to be performed in front of an audience by actors who take on the roles of the characters and who present the story through dialogue and action. Still, we emphasize “reading” drama. We read the playwright’s descriptions and dialogue with the (supposed) interpretation of directors and actors. Thus some qualities of dramatic works will not lose. Poetry tends to present information in subtle ways; it does not immediately get to the point as prose or dramatic works do. Even so, we see poetry as an alien form filled with obscure allusions, complex metrical schemes, and flowery diction. Students are strongly recommended to follow some guidelines for “enjoying” poetry.
